All available adoption dogs can be found in the ‘Albums’ section of our photographs and on our newsfeed. Each dog has their own album dedicated to them and it will read ‘Available for Adoption’ in the title.
The typical adoption process would be as follows:
Message our page which dog you are interested in and some information about yourself, your lifestyle and your property - you can fast track the adoption process by sending us photos of your yard, fencing, kennelling and either owning your own home or proof of your landlords consent
Visit the dog at the pound (locations and open times above)
Fill out an application to adopt
The Animal Control Officer will either discuss with you at the time or contact you if you have been successful, they will arrange a time to check your property (if you have not previously been approved)
Animal Control will then arrange desex of the dog if it is old enough. If it is too young you will need to contact us when the dog is 6 months old to arrange desex, we will also follow up on this as desexing is non-negotiable
Pay the adoption fee at the main council office
Pick up your new dog!
Every dog will be de-sexed, microchipped, registered, de-flead, de-wormed and have one canine parvovirus vaccination - this is covered by the $300 adoption fee.
If the dog is already de-sexed prior to coming into our care, the adoption rate will be cheaper.
Any extra costs incurred above the cost of desex surgery remain the responsibility of the dog owner. Waikato District Council is not liable for any costs incurred above the cost of the standard surgery price. This will be the responsibility of the dog owner.
All owners will be background checked on the National Dog Database.
We do not have the opportunity to socialise our dogs with other animals such as cats or with children so we cannot guarantee what they will be like around them. You are welcome to bring your children to come and meet the dog.
