OUR STORY
DOG PROTECTION SOCIETY NEW ZEALAND
It is said that much can be accomplished with a dream, sadly, The Dog Protection Society was borne out of a nightmare - unwanted, lost, mistreated dogs standing in dog pounds awaiting their turn to be euthanised.
It was these dogs, in May 1973, that inspired Graham and Theresa Elizabeth Fitzpatrick to found the society - a ‘no-kill’ haven for unprotected dogs. It is this very real yet disturbing truth that inspires us to focus continually on the purpose of The Dog Protection Society.
We are an organisation dedicated to rescuing and re-homing dogs of all shapes and sizes to 'forever' homes. Our priority is the care and happiness of our dogs and they stay with us till they find their perfect home and parents, no matter how long it takes !
We have full-time workers and volunteers who play, feed and provide company for our gorgeous dogs, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Since it’s inception, the society has re-homed thousands of dogs. We have a 100% record, even if it meant some of our dogs stayed with us a little longer than others.
We generate funds through our kennelling facility - The Theresa Elizabeth Hotel for Dogs - and through very generous donations made by dog lovers from all over NZ. It’s people like you, with caring, giving hearts, that keep us going and help us to turn nightmares into dreams.
